3D OCT – Optical Coherence Tomography
Arbuthnot Opticians is the first and only optical practice in Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan to provide the Optical Coherence Tomographer, a highly specialised instrument for obtaining a 3D image of the retina and other areas of the eye. This is one of the most advanced diagnostic tools available to eye-care specialists. It is the next generation in imaging, similar to an MRI scan, but used to view the internal structures of the eye, allowing us to see the microscopic layers beneath and within the retina.
ARMD – The OCT can scan the macular to determine if there is any macular degeneration (ARMD). More importantly, it will allow us to determine if it is dry or wet degeneration, enabling earlier and more accurate referral for treatment of wet ARMD.
Glaucoma - It is also a vital tool in the detection of glaucoma, enabling us to measure the thickness of the nerve fibre layer and monitor for subtle changes.
We will use it to screen ocular health to make sure your eyes remain healthy. Some of the typical conditions that we will monitor with the OCT are:
- Macular degeneration or drusen (especially if there is a family history)
- Macular hole or epiretinal membrane
- Glaucoma (especially if there is a family history)
- Optic nerve disease, as seen in multiple sclerosis.
